Limb Lengthening
Limb lengthening surgery is a medical procedure that involves the gradual lengthening of a person’s bone(s) to correct a limb length discrepancy. This discrepancy can occur due to various reasons, such as congenital disabilities, growth plate injuries, bone infections, or trauma.
The surgery involves creating a break in the bone and inserting a device called an external fixator, which is attached to the bone using pins or wires. The external fixator is then adjusted daily or weekly, using a specialized key or wrench, to gradually lengthen the bone. The bone then grows new tissue and fills in the gap created by the lengthening process.
There are two methods used for cosmetic limb lengthening surgery:
The LON (Lengthening Over Nails) method is a combination of internal and external procedures to lengthen the limb. Firstly, an intramedullary nail is placed into the bone, and then an external fixator is attached to the bone. During the lengthening phase of the procedure, the external fixator is adjusted with special tools daily to gradually increase the limb length. This method cuts down the time required for limb lengthening by half, since the patient only carries the external fixator during the lengthening phase.
The precice method is similar to the LON method, but it’s primarily an internal procedure. Instead of an inter medullary nail, the precice method implants a magnetic telescopic rod into the bone structure, which is then gradually increased in length with a remote control device. This method allows for precise adjustments to be made through the remote device, without the need for daily adjustments.
